Powerful Compact Fan
Like other Vornado fans with their vortex grills, this one moves an immense amount of air for its size.
I had the chance to compare its output side-by-side with another little fan I like, the Holmes Blizzard, and this Vornado (called the "Edge") blew the doors off the Blizzard!
I have not had the problem with a high-pitched whine that another customer alluded to, but my unit did develop an annoying rattle at high speed.
I found I could eliminate the rattle temporarily by tightening the screws on the back of the case. Unfortunately, the motor is so powerful at high speed that the screws would soon come loose again, and the rattle would resume.
So -- I installed locking washers under the screws on the back of the case (totalling sixty cents in parts), and I believe I have solved the rattle problem for good.
This is the reason I deducted one star -- customers shouldn't be doing Vornado's engineering for them!
Otherwise I...
Love vornados, except for this one.
We have 2 whole room circulators from Vornado that are excellent. One is over 15 years old, and has been running nearly 24/7 the whole time. The other is over 5 years old and is still great. But... this model disappointed me. We got it for our bedroom in the spring of this year. It now rattles so loud, we can't sleep with it on. We have tried tightening the screws, etc. but the plastic frame somehow rattles like a helicopter blade. Maybe this particular one has a slightly out-of-balance blade or something. It is definitely uncharacteristic of the Vornados I and my family have owned. I hope it's not one of those "they don't make 'em like they used to" things. If you have the room and extra moola, go for the next model up.
Wonderful Fan Dreadful Irresponsible Packaging
As far as fans go Vornado stands alone not just with their patented air flow technology, I remember them in many rooms of the house growing up and for over 40 years I've enjoyed them.
In the 1920's it was Vornado that developed the technology to make the propellers of fighter planes, faster and more efficient. The company played a major part in developing a new era of aerodynamics that made our planes a formidable force against our enemies during the war. In the 1940's, The company used it's patented designs for fans for both home and commercial. Unlike typical fans the Vornado forces a column of air with tremendous force. Vornado fans should be pointed at the ceiling or at an angle hitting the highest corner of the wall where the wall meets the ceiling.
This forces the air to literally explode - filling the entire room with a refreshing cool and constant breeze. The effect is much like a large ceiling fan. In fact for decades we've used these whole room full...
